ATHLETIC TRAINING AT ALMA COLLEGE

The Athletic Training program at Alma College exists to provide student-athletes with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in a healthy and safe environment. Our goals are prevention, first aid, evaluation and treatment of athletic-related injuries, follow-up and rehabilitation, and counseling on available treatment options. We will help provide the medical resources necessary to allow student-athletes to return to play as soon and as safe as possible.

MEDICAL PROVIDERS

Dr. Jack Pinney, MD, is our team physicians and this is a part of a partnership with WellSport Sports Medicine, a division of MidMichigan Health System.

Renee Kern, FNP, and Mandy Wolever, R.N. are the medical directors of the on-campus Wilcox Medical Center. She is especially helpful with general medical conditions and aids the athletic staff in orthopedic evaluations.

Catherine Boerner, Bradley Smith, Denny Griffin, Phil Andre, Robin Jones, Celeste Boyer, Casey Fougerousse and Ryan Sweeney are all certified and licensed athletic trainers. They provide sports health care for injured athletes and are responsible for the daily operation of the Athletic Training room.

Athletic Training Students assist the professional staff in the Athletic Training Room and by providing supervised coverage at practices and games. These clinical experiences help them meet the requirements for Alma College’s major in Athletic Training.

WELLSPORT SPORTS MEDICINE

J.T Pinney, M.D., medical director for WellSport, is with MidMichigan Physicians Group. He is a board certified family physician with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine from the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Pinney is a team physician for the Great Lakes Loons baseball team. Dr. Pinney works with a team of other experts throughout the middle of Michigan to evaluate, manage and treat patients in the most effective and efficient manner possible. This team includes: Rehabilitation professionals such as athletic trainers, physical therapists and occupational therapists who have specific expertise in working with athletes and treating specific injuries; Orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in each patient's specific injury; and other specialists as needed to address conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, weight management and arthritis that can limit an athlete's performance.
