Men's Lacrosse loses to Hope 21-2 in MIAA Opener
The Alma College Men's Lacrosse team has high hopes and expectations as they embark on unchartered territory - a MIAA schedule. On Tuesday afternoon, Hope College visited Bahlke Field to take on the Scots in the first-ever Men's Lacrosse conference match.
"We found ourselves outmatched against a very talented and well-coached team today," said Alma Head Coach Jason Levesque. "Our young group saw first hand the speed, level and tempo that MIAA lacrosse offers, and what it takes to compete at this level.
"We'll watch the film, correct our mistakes, improve upon the miscues and move forward together as we look to Saturday's contest."
The Flying Dutchmen ruined the fun for the home team by earning a 21-2 victory over the Scots. With the loss, Alma is now 3-6 overall this season and 0-1 in the MIAA, while the Flying Dutchmen sit at 6-1 in 2013 and 1-0 in the league.
The game was tough from the beginning for the Scots as Hope scored two goals 15 seconds apart at the 10:15 and 10:00 mark of the first quarter for a 2-0 lead. The Flying Dutchmen then used two goals 31 seconds apart later in the frame and led 4-0 after one.
Hope led it 9-0 when the Scots were able to notch their first goal of the game, as Fr. M/A Jonathan Lindback (Tavernier, Fla./Coral Shores) scored a goal that was assisted by Fr. M/A Kyle Schnitzer (Aurora, Col./Smoky Hill) at 5:05. Hope then tallied six goals in the last 5:04 of the half to go into halftime with a 15-1 lead.
The Flying Dutchmen scored the only three goals of the third quarter and entered the final 15 minutes with a commanding 18-1 advantage.
The Scots scored their second goal of the game at 12:01 of the fourth quarter when Fr. M/A Stephan Salceda (Waukesha, Wis./St. John's Northwestern Military Academy) hit the back of the net assisted by Lindback. Hope scored the final three goals of the contest to come away with the 21-2 victory.
Alma continues their MIAA season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Trine University. Game time is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
