The Alma College women's lacrosse team kicked off the conference portion of their schedule on Wednesday, traveling to Adrian College to take on the Bulldogs. The Scots were able to take the 2-1 lead early in the match, but were unable to sustain it, falling to Adrian 15-4 on the road.
With the loss, Alma drops to 5-5 on the year with a 0-1 mark in the MIAA. The Bulldogs improve to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Following an Adrian goal, Jr. MF Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing/Waverly) put the Scots on the board with an unassisted goal at 25:57. Six minutes later, Gallihugh assisted on a goal by So. A Ashton Street (Brighton/Brighton) to give Alma the early 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to take the 8-2 advantage into the locker rooms.
Gallihugh started the second half by scoring her two second goal of the afternoon, to cut the deficit to five with just under 20 minutes remaining.
Adrian answered with five-unanswered goals to stretch the lead to 13-3 with just over five minutes to play.
With 1:40 remaining, Fr. A Valkyrie Progar (Brighton/Brighton) found the back of the net off an assist by Street, to bring the score to 13-4.
The home team would score the final two goals on the afternoon to claim the 15-4 victory.
For Alma, Gallihugh collected two goals and an assist, while Street added a goal and one assist.
In goal, Sr. GK Stephanie Herman (Bay City/All-Saints Central) collected eight saves on 23 shots.
The Scots committed 23 turnovers and forced 19 by Adrian. The Bulldogs also held the edge in draw controls (17-4) and groundballs (29-21).
Alma returns home on Saturday, April 5th, when it welcomes Kalamazoo College for a match at 1:00 p.m.
