On Wednesday afternoon, the Alma College women's lacrosse team hosted Calvin College in a MIAA semi-final contest at Bahlke Field. The Scots outscored the Knights 9-3 in the second half to break open a tight affair between two even squads, and walked off the field with the final 15-8 margin of victory.
The Scots now advance to the MIAA Championship on Friday against either Adrian and Albion, who play on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Scots are now 13-5, while Calvin finishes their 2014 campaign at 9-6.
Alma jumped out early as So. A Ashton Street (Brighton/Brighton) scored on a free position kick at the 25:51 mark of the first half. Jr. M Sydney Bryce (Lake Orion/Lake Orion) and Fr. Stephanie Chou (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) each tallied a goal to make it 3-0 just about 10 minutes into the contest.
Street made it 4-0 at 18:38 unassisted before Calvin got their first just 35 seconds later. A tally by Scots leading scorer Jr. M Tracy Gallihugh (Lansing/Waverly) at 17:52 put Alma ahead 5-1, but Calvin countered with a surge of their own.
The Knights would score four times from the 8:32 to 1:06 mark to tie the game at 5-5 as they clamped down on the Scots' offense at the same time. Street scored her third goal of the game with just 43 seconds left in the half to give Alma a 6-5 advantage heading into the break.
The second half saw Alma score the first two goals - by So. D Emily Reverman (Grand Ledge/Grand Ledge) and Bryce - to increase their lead to 8-5 just 2:24 into the final frame. Calvin would answer however with two in a row and cut their deficit to 8-7 at the 20:57 mark.
Street made it 9-7 on a free position kick at 19:54 and Fr. A Valkyrie Progar (Brighton/Brighton) scored, assisted by Chou, at 17:39 for a three-goal advantage at 10-7.
About eight minutes later, the Scots went ahead 11-7 on a strike by Gallihugh and Chou followed up with another one at 6:39. Then, 33 seconds later, Gallihugh scored again and Alma suddenly had a comfortable 13-7 advantage.
Chou scored at 4:11 before Calvin fought back with one at the 3:36 mark to make it a 14-8 contest. However, this was to be Alma's day, as Gallihugh scored her fourth of the day, giving the Scots the final seven-goal margin of victory.
For the day, Street joined Gallihugh with four goals, while Chou finished with three tallies and an assist. In addition, Bryce scored on both her shots on goal. Sr. GK Stephanie Herman (Bay City/All-Saints Central) had 12 saves in earning the win in net.
The Knights finished the game with 35 shots, while Alma had 28. The Scots had the advantage in ground balls by a slim 25-24 margin and Alma had 40 fouls to Calvin's 32.
If Adrian wins tonight, the Scots will play away, but if the Britons are victorious, Alma will host Albion. Either way, the Championship is slated to start at 7 p.m. on Friday.
