Friday evening saw the Alma College Volleyball team host Calvin College in the 2013 home opener at Art Smith Arena. The night did not go as planned as the Scots lost to the Knights by a score of 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 16-25). With the loss, Alma fell to 0-2 in the MIAA and 3-3 overall, while Calvin is now 6-0 in 2013 and 2-0 in the league.
"I thought we competed well against them and played hard all the way to the end," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "But, we need to work on our offense for us to get over the hump to win a match like this. We need to find more floor on our hitting as Calvin's 72 digs shows that we are hitting to much at that them. On the other side, I thought our defense was pretty solid overall against a good team."
The Scots had a early 6-5 lead in the first set but a 13-4 Calvin run put the visitors ahead 18-10 and they were able to close out the 25-17 win. In set two, Alma again jumped out to a quick lead and the set was tied at 14-14 before the Knights got the upper hand. After the Scots cut a deficit to 20-19, Calvin reeled off the final five points for a 25-19 victory.
The Knights never trailed in the third and deciding set, but again, Alma hung in there throughout. The score was tied at 12-12, but the Scots could not get the lead and Calvin kicked it into another gear. The visitors closed the match out with a 13-4 run that gave them a 25-16 set win and a 3-0 match victory.
Sr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led the Scots with seven kills and added seven digs and one blocked shot. Sr. DS/L Jaycee Cole (Alma, Mich./Alma) paced the home team with 14 digs, while Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi, Mich./Mercy) added eight. Dulzo also had nine assists, while Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) had a team-high 10 helpers.
The Scots continue the season Saturday afternoon, when they host Saint Mary's College in another MIAA contest at Art Smith Arena. Start time is scheduld for 1:00 p.m.
