Volleyball defeated by Saint Mary's 3-1 on Wednesday (23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25)

On Wednesday night, the Alma College volleyball team hit the road and took on host Saint Mary's College in a key MIAA contest. The Scots were defeated 3-1 (23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25) by the Belles and now have a 4-7 league record and are 9-11 overall this season. SMC improved to 6-5 in the MIAA and 8-11 in 2013.

"We led in two our the sets we lost but we could not hold on to win," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "The achilles heel for this team all year has been the fact that we play not to lose instead of closing out wins. We need to remember that we are a good team and that these wins should be ours."

The first set was close throughout but the Belles were able to squeak out the 25-23 win. Alma led 18-12 and then again 22-19 in set two before dropping another 25-23 decision. In the Scots' win in set three, it was tied 7-7 before the visitors jumped out to a 14-8 advantage en route to the 25-16 win.

Alma had leads of 5-1, 11-5 and 19-15 in the fourth set before eventually losing 25-22 and dropping the match 3-1.

Sr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) had 16 kills, 12 kills, one blocked shot and three block assists for the Scots in the loss. Sr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, TX/Lutheran North) added eight kills and four digs, while Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi, Mich./Mercy) contributed 16 assists and 12 digs.

Sr. DS/L Danae Sietsema (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) had 18 digs and Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) had 19 assists and nine digs.

Alma continues their 2013 season next Tuesday evening when they travel to Adrian College for a league match. Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
