Volleyball hangs on to defeat host Adrian College 3-2 on Tuesday evening

On Tuesday evening, the Alma College volleyball team defeated host Adrian College in a very important MIAA contest between the two teams. The Scots won the match by a score of 3-2 (25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 15-10) and improved to 5-7 in the league and 10-11 overall, while the Bulldogs are now 2-9 in the MIAA and 7-14 in 2013.

"We went in after a couple of tough losses and proved to ourselves that if we play together, we will come out on top," said Scots Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "We have talked a lot lately about making a choice and although we let sets three and four go, we made a choice to change and came out strong in set five to get the win."

The evening started out strong for Alma as they broke a 3-3 tie in set one and took a 20-9 lead. The Bulldogs eventually cut the deficit to 22-15 before the Scots pulled away for the 25-17 victory. Then in set two, Alma broke an 18-18 deadlock and gutted out a 25-23 win for a 2-0 advantage.

In the third set, the Scots were had an 18-17 lead and then were tied at 22-22 before Adrian scored three of the final four points to win 25-23 and force a fourth set. The Bulldogs led from start to finish in the next set, and one point led by as many as seven. Although Alma cut their deficit to 22-19, the home team hung on for the 25-20 victory, sending the match to a deciding fifth set.

The visitors led from the outset of the fifth set, but the Bulldogs were a resilient bunch on this night, fighting back to tie it at 8-8. However, Alma knew the importance of the match and found the extra gear needed for victory. They outscored Adrian 7-2 the rest of the set to walk off with the 15-10 advantage and the hard-fought 3-2 match win.

For the winning Scots, Sr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led the way with 16 kills, 17 digs and four block assists. Sr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, TX/Lutheran North) had 14 kills and two block assists, while Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) notched 25 assists and and 17 digs.

Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi, Mich./Mercy) finished with 22 assists and 14 digs, while Sr. DS/L Danae Sietsema (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) and Sr. DS/L Jaycee Cole (Alma, Mich./Alma) contributed 16 and 15 digs respectively.

The Scots next play on Friday evening when they travel to Kalamazoo College for a 6:30 p.m. match.
