Alma claims third-straight win, defeating Albion (25-16, 26-24, 25-21) at home on Saturday

The Alma College volleyball team shutout Albion 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-21) at home on Saturday afternoon in MIAA action.

With the win - the third straight for the Scots - Alma improved to 12-11 overall with a 7-7 mark in conference. The Britions dropped to 5-17 on the year and 1-12 in the MIAA with the loss on Saturday.

It's nice to finish the week out with a 3-0 record," remarked Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "Today's match was played at a different pace than we've been used to the past couple of games and we are learning that we need to keep up our energy in any situation. We now have a week to prepare for the University of Chicago and Elmhurst, both of whom are ranked nationally."

The Scots raced out to an early 5-0 advantage to start set one, eventually stretching the lead to 10 at 17-7. In a set Alma never trailed in, the Scots maintained a comfortable nine-point lead throughout and took set one 25-16. 

Alma started the second set just as dominent as the first and took the 6-0 lead early. Albion would battle back to tie the score at 13-13 before taking a 17-14 lead late in the set. The Scots would answer and tie the score at 24-24 before scoring two-unanswered points to take the set 26-24.

Despite being down 17-15 late in set three, Alma would string together a 5-1 run to win the set (25-21) and take the match (3-0).

Sr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison/Jenison) lead the way for the Scots recording a double-double with a team-high 10 kills and 16 digs. Fr. S Mary Dulzo (Novi/Mercy) paced the Alma attack with 18 helpers and Jr. DS Jaycee Cole (Alma/Alma) tallied a team-best 16 digs. Sr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason/Mason) finished with 14 assists, three digs and a team-high four aces in the victory.

Lauren Outwater led the Britions with seven kills and Ami Milligan tallied 19 assists on Saturday.

The Scots will travel to Illinois on Friday, October 25, to take on the University of Chicago at 3:30 p.m. as part of the Morgan Buerkett Memorial Tournament.
